First identification of Bordetella bronchiseptica subclinical mastitis in a lactating dairy cow in New Zealand

Mastitis, inflammation of the mammary gland, is a frequent problem in dairy cows. Often, this inflammation isn't obvious, a state called subclinical mastitis. It's typically identified by changes in indicators like somatic cell count (SCC). Most cases, clinical or subclinical, are caused by infectious organisms, primarily bacteria.
In New Zealand, the bacteria most commonly linked to mastitis include Streptococcus uberis, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and other staphylococcus species. Globally, however, conventional microbiology techniques have identified over 100 different microbial species from mastitis cases.
Increasingly, advanced methods like MALDI-TOF are used to identify bacteria, especially when standard biochemistry tests aren't sufficient. MALDI-TOF is known for its high accuracy, reportedly between 90% and 99%.
This report presents a notable finding: the first likely identification in New Zealand of Bordetella bronchiseptica causing subclinical mastitis in a dairy cow.
