Colorado vet provides update on avian influenza spread in dairy cattle

In early 2024, a spill-over event from wild birds in Texas led to the first outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza in dairy cattle. At last update in early November, the virus had infected 473 herds in 15 states. Most of the outbreaks have occurred in California (259) and Colorado (64). In a short talk at the 2024 National Mastitis Council Regional Meeting, held in Ghent, Belgium, Jason Lombard, Colorado State University dairy veterinarian and professor, provided an update on spread and transmission pathways of the virus, and discussed the variability he’s seeing in terms of clinical signs. He also shared details on the public health response, and talked about how challenging it has been to control the virus’ spread.
