Consejo Nacional de la Calidad de la Leche y Prevención de la Mastitis (CNLM) in Columbia

In September 1999 a multidisciplinary group of dairy producers, veterinarians, academics, industry processors, dairy suppliers, and the dairy chain in Colombia ran into a common necessity and founded the Consejo Nacional de la Calidad de la Leche y Prevención de la Mastitis (Colombian quality milk and Mastitis Prevention Council) (CNLM), a non-profit private organization that started to promote a good milk quality and udder health across the main dairy regions of Colombia.
Colombia is a green country with an extremely rich biodiversity. Fifty percent of the country is in the Orinoquia and Amazon jungles. Dairy farming plays a significant role in supporting local economies and families active in the dairy industry. The model of grassland farming and grazing cows for milk production has been the predominant model since more than 50 years ago. Although the previous years’ productivity and milk yield were very low, dairy farming still played an important role in the national GDP with a contribution of 2%. For agriculture in general, the contribution to GDP was close to 24% in 2010, with more than half a million families depending directly on this activity.
